American Standard (yes, that title may have been influenced by a random observation in a bathroom) is a visual essay consisting of illustrations and short comics that all occur at a southwestern Missouri motel over one dreary spring day in 1994. These stories, which were inspired by true events, represent the struggle with physical or psychological comfort within a motel's nostalgic and souvenir-like container. These hypothetical realities, far from comforting, glamorous, or sleek, illustrate themselves to be entirely possible and even painfully relatable for some.
